Skill in Village (SIV) Program

Empowering rural youth with skills for a better future.

The Skill in Village (SIV) Program is an after-school, activity-based education initiative designed for students in Grades 5 to 8 studying in rural government schools. It is more than just an English language program—it is a confidence-building journey that helps students express themselves, work in teams, and dream beyond the boundaries of their village.

Delivered by trained local women facilitators, SIV sessions create classrooms that are engaging, interactive, and focused on real-life learning. Through structured lessons and creative tools, we help children overcome learning barriers, grow in confidence, and build a strong foundation for their academic and personal journeys.

The Challenge We Face

Why programs like SIV matter.

Many children in rural government schools struggle with basic reading, writing, and communication skills, particularly in English. The classroom environment is often rigid, teacher-led, and focused on rote learning—leaving little room for interaction or expression.

32.8 %
Reading Proficiency
Only 32.8% of Std V students in Karnataka’s government schools can read a Std II-level text (ASER 2024)

14.5 %
Literacy Gap
Gap between private and government school students in foundational reading skills

6.1 %
Enrollment Decline
Government school enrollment declined from 72.9% (2022) to 66.8% (2024)

These numbers are not just indicators of academic decline—they point to a loss of confidence, motivation, and future opportunity. Our programs are built to reverse this trend by giving children the tools, support, and environment they need to learn joyfully and succeed.

Our Approach

Learning that’s real, relevant, and rooted in community.

At the core of SIV is a simple belief: when children enjoy learning, they grow in every direction. We’ve created a model that is deeply local, entirely hands-on, and proven to work.

SIV sessions are filled with games, storytelling, role play, and group work, making classrooms dynamic and participatory.

Content is aligned with students’ age and learning levels, with customized workbooks for progressive development.

We create spaces where students ask, respond, discuss, and explore. Facilitators serve as mentors, encouraging every child to find their voice.

100% women facilitators from local villages undergo 20-day residential training, creating employment and leadership opportunities.
